Dirty Sunshine: A Homie Video

December 25, 2007

WORDS AND VIDEO BY JURGEN KOCH

Dirty Sunshine? It’s a “homie video” but not in the sense of “here, press the red button and point this camera at me.”

The trip kinda came to be because of the winters in the Northeast. Our crew all live in different cities now, (Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philly, NYC, and Austin) and we haven’t all skated together in a while. We all felt like something had been missing in our lives, and this is what it was; skating with your friends. There were no “hammers” or “enders”, just being psyched, having fun and skating with your friends. Some people would rather not have a camera around to fully enjoy the “bro-down”, but the other thing that made us all feel like we needed this trip was each of us viewing an old trip video we made and remembering good things like sleeping on floors and not speaking the local language.

So we all met up in Austin and we skate like we were kids again. We are all still kids though, we just pay bills now too. And we drink legally. Anyway - having some form of video from trips doesn’t seem important until way after the fact. Even when we don’t get to hang out, you can remember the fun stuff with a some help from the videos. At the end of the Austin trip, we were beat. That’s when we got a ton of sausages and grilled out, all different kinds like garlic spice or italian this, beef that, with peppers, without onions, all kinds of them - but they all tasted exactly the same.

I took the Panasonic camera and decided to actually shot the whole thing in 24p anamorphic mode. I think it looks a lot better than regular death-lens footage. It feels more “grown up” for some reason too. Even with the shitty tripod I had (I left it behind because it sucked so bad) I think it turned out okay.

101’s “Falling Down”

December 25, 2007

101 Skateboards
“Falling Down”

Released: 1993

This is the first in a series of classic skate video podcast downloads brought to you by Mumble and BobShirt.com. Stay tuned as we dig into the VHS crates and pull out some of our old favorites as well as some new ones. Here’s a description of this first release, cut and pasted from skimthefat.com:

“101’s Falling Down is an early 90’s promo from the world of obscure, seemingly unimportant footage, which time has forgotten. The footage is all street and very technical. While the tricks are thrown down on low curbs or off very low ledges, it is simply in the name of progression. A young Koston is perhaps the most familiar skater of the bunch, but is by no means the most talented in this film…”

Plan B’s “The Questionable Video” from 1992

December 24, 2007

VIDEO: COURTESY OF PLAN B SKATEBOARDS

No introduction should be needed for this podcast of Plan B’s first video, The Questionable Video, from 1992. If you skated back then and you didn’t view this video as your bible… well, then you probably didn’t actually skate back then. It was the epitome of everything skateboarding in the 90’s and is at the top of a lot of people’s list as the best skate video of all time. And even though it’s 16 years old it’s packed with super good parts from some dudes who are still ripping as professional skateboarders today.

It doesn’t have a set release date but we’re obviously really looking forward to the next Plan B video, their first full length feature since they relaunched a couple of years ago. In the meantime we’ll be watching the podcasts on their site and also looking back on this first offering from them and wondering how they could possibly outdo it. It’s a challenge, but with the team they’ve brought together there’s no doubt that it’s in the cards.
