branson

My bestest buddy Evan of curseofthemultiples did a rad t-shirt graphic featuring my Dog branson (named after multimillionaire Richard Branson) it’s been put out by the fine folks at Holiday Matinee as part of their artist series, It’s a simple concept, you buy a shirt and they will donate 100% of the proceeds to Plant-It 2020, an awesome non-profit (founded by late country legend John Denver!) that helps plant and maintain indigenous trees worldwide. All shirts are organic and tag free and purchasing just one will help plant twenty trees! nice eh…..

Not a Quitter

December 31, 2008

I know quitters never win and winners never quit. And yes I know chicks dig it, but I have to quit smoking. It’s not going to be a new years resolution that’s for sure, because those never work for me, but it’s just going to be something I try to do in the near future. Here is to all of y’all - and trying to do something this year and all the rest.

Have a Fine Oh Nine

December 31, 2008

So stoked to be on here - many thanks to Bob and big, big ‘Kron-gratulations’ on Arlo, it is a fun ride. Like for example when he gives you that stomach virus and you projectile vomit 4 or 5 times on the sidewalk (with him strapped to your chest) in front of all the girls from your mama lunch club.

Anyway I sincerely hope ‘09 is the raddest one ever for you all and looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

It Is Not February

December 31, 2008

Thanks for including me in your club, Bob. You suggested I include Thrasher issues, so here’s the latest. When I was a kid I always wondered why the cover dates on skateboard magazines were always so far in the future. Turns out they do that as a way to weasel more time on the newsstand. The people that own places that sell magazines are supposed to pull the magazines after the cover date, rip the covers off, throw the rest of the magazine away and then send in the covers to get credit for them not selling. A buyproduct of this accounting practice is the multi-packs of coverless porno mags you often see for sale at truck stops. In that case, someone sent the covers back for credit then sold them anyway - which, it turns out, most truck stop porno purchasers are just fine with, covers or not. So this is the Feb. 2009 issue of Thrasher, even though it’s out next week. I’d give this issue a B-. The best thing in it is probably a one-page intereview with Chet Childress were he talks about a particularly horrible ad his sponsors made him do back when he was too young and/or naive to get out of it. He uses the phrase, “Pull a nappy dip out,” which has been bouncing around in my head all week for some reason.

Download This Playlist

December 31, 2008

I’ve been spinning records quite a bit in the San Diego area, most frequently at Matt Hensley’s bar in Carlsbad. A friend asked me to mix a podcast for his clothing company’s Web site so I figured out how to rig up my Technics into Garage Band and did a test run. The test run sounded good enough so I never re-recorded. So here’s a spontaneous, slightly poorly-mixed DJ Blairly Legal playlist to listen to as you browse the Club. Thank you and enjoy.

Bob! Congrats on successful baby making. Thanks for inviting me to go mumble clubbing. I’m such a blogtard—this is my third attempt to stick something up. Currently praying to www.com gods.

Hackett being Hackett, only older

This short interview piece was hacked out my book because of space limit. If you ever get a chance to talk to Dave Hackett, take advantage of the opportunity. Dude is hilarious. He’s got that awesome ’70s pro skater/rock star ego and will readily admit it, but it’s inclusive not exclusive. His ego is the Good Year blimp and he wants to take you on a ride. He’s also the oldest old man to ever do the Loop—almost fifty! The Loop is no joke. It’s broken some of the best in the business (Tony Hawk, Duane Peters, Peter Hewitt, etc.).

DAVE HACKETT ON HIS EARLY DAYS

Chopped from Stalefish: skateboard culture from the rejects who made it.

Malibu Park Junior High School was my very first skateboard contest. It was in 1973 and organized by the school and held during school. I was thirteen and in seventh grade. My school was directly across from Zuma Beach and every boy in junior high surfed and skateboarded. There were jocks, runner and basketballs players, but pretty much 85% of the boys surfed and skated. The image of skating [from adults] was outlaw, a bunch of drug addicts. If you were a skateboarder, you were looked down upon.

I wasn’t trying to be a badass, I just loved going fast, feeling like I was flying. I never played any sports. Nothing. I did play volleyball at the beach for fun on my own, but I was not a team player and I did not get along well with others. I could not take direction. I was very, very insecure and I needed a lot of attention. If you put me into a team situation, I was always the guy talking loud and fucking things up to get the attention I needed. Skateboard was mine and nobody could tell me how to do it or when to do it or when not to do it.
