STREET DREAMS?

POSTED March 16, 2009 BY Bob Kronbauer

Okay, so what I’d like to do today is start a little dialogue. I’d like to think that the readers and the contributors to our site make up a fairly good representation of “behind the scenes” of skateboarding, so I want to see what everybody thinks of the upcoming movie, Street Dreams. Can Hollywood get it right? Did they get it right?

To save you the trouble of going to the Street Dreams movie web site and having to sign in to see any of the content (which I think is the stupidest “feature” ever on a web site), take a look at the trailer embedded below and comment, anonymously if you want to, I just am honestly interested in what everybody thinks of this.

Okay, wait a second. Sorry.

Ever the investigative journalist, I just “found” (I looked around for 3 seconds) this clip:

Find more videos like this on Street Dreams Movie

So maybe the question is less about Hollywood getting it right… but there is definitely some dialogue in order though.

What do you think?

I know Nino, one of the writers, from his Philly days. Knowing him and his background, I think there’s a fair chance it will be solid.

Now if Hollywood did get it’s grips in there?… That might be another story.

    I’m pulling for them though.

Also, weird, I didn’t have to log in to see that content, maybe it’s a US/Canada thing?

I couldn’t log in. Super curious to see this as Rob dropped it on Fantasy Factory last night.

I clicked on the hyper link within Bob K’s text for “Street Dreams Movie Web Site” and found both videos on the front page.

Sorry, Just another version of of Gleaming the Cube, Thrashin, and what other bad movies that involve skateboarding skateboard Ams and Pros. Just a different script along with a different generation of skaters.Hi end movie with a terrible script with worthy pro’s in the movie as the rebel pebbles.

    Straight to dvd .

Is it “real” because they wear New Era hats? Also kinda hard to believe PRod as this character. they should have got some real street rat from LA. there is a million of them.

No, i dont know, i think the kids will love it. And i’ll probably will find it amusing and will absolutely buy the DVD for my “DVD’s-i-want-to-have but-never-watches” shelf.

By what Dyrdek said in the clip, he seems to know that this film will be met with a heavy dose of skepticism. How could it not be? Nearly every skate themed movie is based on, like Dyrdek mentioned, a contest or sponsorship. This film seems to be based on the almighty sponsorship goal. For me, that puts a hit on its credibility. I can’t say to anyone, “yes, it’s like that” because sponsorship was never a goal of mine. The problem with feature films is that the main characters life must be changed from their position at the beginning of the movie. They must overcome some obstacle or challenge. Most skateboarding – to me – is not like a movie format. It is more like a TV show – small things are accomplished along the way and you are back where you started again at the end of the episode/day.
Skateboarding is nearly impossible to explain to those who don’t participate. It’s like people who love boating – I just don’t understand why they love their boats and floating around so much. I tried it and it was painfully boring. They can’t explain it, but other boaters seem to understand it and share the feeling without talking about it.
To me, a more realistic skateboarding movie would be about trying to maintain a relationship with a girl who can’t understand skateboarding. I’m sure a lot more people have experienced that more than being offered a potential sponsorship.
I hope the movie does well so Dyrdek can make his money back. Really though, who am I kidding? I’ll go see it in a theater if any near me show it. I just really hope it’s not an overly dramatic film.

There can never be another Gleaming the Cube. It was just too good.

This kinda scares me. I saw Rob drop it on Fantasy Factory and felt my stomach clench up. I hope that it works so badly, but am seriously skeptical.

We shall see…keep those fingers crossed.

i think it is funny, but not good. it is all so shinny i think, to good to be real maybe. but no i thinks it is not that bad. but it wil never be as good as a real skatemovie for shure!

i want everyone to lose money on this thing and slam the nail in the coffin, guaranteeing another twenty years before the next douche takes a crack at “really getting a skate movie done right.”

stick to documentary films if you want to get it right. That way, there are no “concerned parents” to be seen. Or “plot.”

    jeeze do i sound hateful.

It seems to me that they are taking the contest movie to that place that it needs to be, for today at least. It’s like a movie about skateboarding magazines and videos. Looks like fun but fiction for sure.

Rob Dyrdek is a great speaker. He is very convincing when he’s saying that this movie is gonna be true.

But the part in the trailer at 1:07 where the dude jumps into the back of the van screaaaaaaams of “Grind”.
