Call for ASAP art donations, help a friend

May 26, 2009

I’m pasting an email I received today about our friend Justin, please read. Thanks.

Hello.
I’m emailing you because one of my favorite people, Justin Van Hoy, (which
some of you may know) has been suffering and battling with Leukemia for
quite some time now. He has just been released from being in the hospital
for 3 months undergoing chemo for the 2nd time, radiation & a bone marrow
transplant. Justin, and his amazing wife Holly, are struggling
physically, mentally and financially. We are organizing events for them
to show our love and support all over the US, and we are organizing an
evening here in Los Angeles on Friday June 5th at the Poketo Studio in
downtown. We are going to have a silent art auction, which we would love
if you could donate a piece for.. I understand that this is extremely
short notice but if anyone can participate or forward this to other
artists who may be interested or to anyone that could help in any way that
would be amazing.

Justin is an amazing person and artist. For those of you who think you
don’t know him, well you actually do, Justin has worked with Shepard
Fairey, was the art director of Swindle Magazine, he’s worked with Roger
Gastman for several years on a variety of projects including book designs
to projects with Boost Mobile, he’s worked on projects for DKNY, DIM MAK,
American Apparel, Threadless, worked on a bunch of stuff with Mark the
Cobra Snake and on and on and on…

Here are some links relating to Justin -
a site with info & donation information :
http://cancersuckshelpjustin.com/
A blog Holly (Jusitn’s wife) kept since he was admitted to the hospital:
http://justinupdates.tumblr.com/page/1

We are trying to surprise Justin & Holly with all this, so please don’t
contact them about any of this, but please feel free to forward this
information to anyone you think would be able to help in some way. Please
contact Chris Bettig -helpjustin@themountainlabel.com or Ted &
Angie at Poketo – poketo@poketo.com to confirm your participation in the
auction or in any other way you could help.

IMPORTANT INFO:

  • 100% of all money will go directly to Justin
  • This event is Friday June 5th from 6-10pm in downtown LA at the Poketo Studio
  • we need an email confirmation of your participation & to coordinate delivery of art : helpjustin@themountainlabel.com
  • all work must make it to the Poketo Studio by Thursday June 4th – Poketo 510 S Hewitt St #506 Los Angeles, CA 90013
  • This is one of many events across the US that weekend that friends of Justin are throwing to help lift his spirits and to raise some $, please help out however you can. Any and all help is appreciated! Anyone anywhere can make a donation here: http://cancersuckshelpjustin.com/

Thanks from all of the people that love Justin & Holly.

THE MUMBLE COLLECTION FROM THREADLESS SELECT

May 25, 2009

Over the past couple of months I’ve had the honor of working with Dustin Hostetler (AKA UPSO) at Threadless Select, putting together a series of t-shirts for them. Following up the president of RISD’s series was a bit daunting but I called upon 4 of my dearest Club Mumblers and I’ve got to say that I’m over the moon (super cheesy pun intended) about how the series of Outer Space-themed designs from Michael Leon, Andy Jenkins, Don Pendleton and Geoff Mcfetridge came together…

I’m going to be bringing you more about the series in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, click over to Select and scoop one up before they’re gone!

Monsieur T. spring/summer preview # 8

May 25, 2009

The eighth preview of our spring/summer collection is another collabo shirt with the super Danish graphic designer, Emil Kozak.
That shirt first came out last year and quickly sold out. We decided to change the colorways and bring it back.
It will be available soon on our site ( like next week) as well as at a handfull of accounts worldwide

Mini Mini Ramp at LCB London

May 25, 2009

LCB’s skate stores, situated on the top of Brick Lane and in Camden are super friendly places to hangout, check emails and drink good coffee. They’re also a refreshing alternative to the slightly pretentious hipster hangouts of which the areas are more famous for.

There’s now even more reason to go there now as they’ve installed a ‘very mini’ mini ramp in the bottom of the Camden store which in my opinion is one of the most fun things you can ride on a skateboard… for people like me with an aversion to big things…

Volume 3 of The Los Angeles Recordings

May 22, 2009

IntroSplash

I just finished updating Rebel Sciences with the latest installment of “The Los Angeles Recordings”. Check it out for a dose of L.A. street photography from the ground level. For those of you on the east coast, peep the upcoming issue of Liberator magazine for an interview about the project and some of the reasons why I started documenting my neighborhood. And finally, if you get a minute, check out the new artwork by my good friend Sherm. She’s easily one of the best Graffiti artists in L.A.

Jason Adams Interview

May 22, 2009

ja_interviewheader

I recently had the privilege of interviewing skateboarder, artist, and friend Jason Adams. Straight up Adams Family guy. We conversed ‘bout his new artwork, new sponsors, and old videos. The Scarecrow video “Disturb Not The Sleep of Death” is still one of my favorite VHS’s to watch pre-skate mission. Anyone who has been following Jason’s vocation knows that he is a master of mayhem: neither wall nor street is safe from his mordant will. Put on your bifocals, grab a cold drink, and read how Jason has been enjoi-ing his return to the Label. — Kelly D. Williams

Kelly D. Williams: Where are you at right now?
Jason Adams: Home, kitchen table, wine in a beer glass its 10:36 on a Friday night. I’m dirty.

Do you smell bad?
Probably, depending on who you ask.

Owl Beer Hitachino Nest

May 21, 2009

r0038624

I don’t know too much about Beer, but this bottle was too cool to pass up to photograph. It says Hitachino Nest. Kiuchi Brewery. I don’t know what this one tastes like, but I’m sure it’s good. It’s White Ale. Next time, I’m going to get one… The price is sort of steep.

Anyone taste this one?
