Prepare to Time Code

POSTED July 13, 2009 BY Seb Carayol

Lennie Kirk must have thought I had quite a catch-up to do, that’s probably why he gave me this Bible in 1996, when we met and shot  few things. They came out pretty bad but hey, I was an absolute beginner -and I never passed that stage with skateboard photography, unfortunately. When I came back to France he called me up in the middle of the night for a minute, asking if I had read his present. Then we lost touch for a good ten years, when I found out that he was locked up.

So I started the long process of trying to gather the authorizations to interview him in jail. It took a while, and the result is in the new Skateboarder. Thanks Lennie, and also I wanted to thank personnally his mom Betty Kirk, who passed away just recently, for all her help.

Hey, just picked up the recent issue of Skateboarder with your Lennie Kirk interview. Thanks a lot for tracking Lennie down and clearing some of the many rumors. I started skating right when Lennie was hitting the scene in ’95; his skating blew my mind…and then he disappeared. It was tragic because he was miles ahead of everyone…and he had that weird, raw Paulo Diaz-type style going for him. I haven’t bought a skate mag in about a year, but this was certainly one of the most worthwhile interviews anyone has done in some time.
