Having a little skate session with my daughter Daphne. She’s just into flip tricks and big stair sets, but her old man only likes to cruise the tennis court.  Photo by Joslyn McNair.

Whom of Which Contentment Came With Difficulty

September 29, 2009

bvblog

My friend Beau lived his life according to his heart, a heart which he wore on his sleeve. And as long as I knew him, he struggled with anxiety, depression, and addiction… When there was light, he was creative, and made beautiful art & music. But when he was dark, he had an impenetrable sadness, that even I could not reach.

On September 27th, my beloved friend, Beau Velasco passed away.

Saddened by such an untimely loss amongst our young world, I’m reaching out, reminding you to take action in bad times, and to appreciate the good ones.

RIP sweet Beau, you will be missed, and forever remembered.  I will continue to march through this life with your ink in my skin, inspiration in my soul, and love in my heart.

Here are some of the t-shirt projects we have done for Analog Clothing over the last few seasons. I figured it would be neat to see all of them in one place. For more information:  http://distriktdesign.blogspot.com/search?q=analog

WILD THINGS on VBS

September 29, 2009

picture-22

Just posted a really interesting profile at VBS of KK Barrett, the production designer on Where the Wild Things Are. Had the chance to meet KK a few years ago at Spike’s office, really fascinating guy. So stoked for the film!

// CROWNFARMER - BEHIND THE BRAND

September 28, 2009

picture-31

Had a chance to chat with the man himself Mr. Kronbauer about the resurrection of his CROWNFARMER brand, figured it would be nice to share with you guys…..enjoy!

Q- Crownfarmer has been on hiatus for a couple years, what has spurred the resurrection?
A- I actually wasn’t sure I was ever going to bring it back. What happened was, a few years back things were going super well, we were busy enough that I handed the operations side of things over to a super shady business dude whom I mistakenly trusted, and he subsequently ran it straight into the ground and ruined a lot of the relationships I had personally built up with the brand over the years. I came really close to putting it to sleep altogether, I didn’t even want to think about the brand for a while, but it’s been a couple of years and that bad taste is finally out of my mouth and now I’m just stoked to be doing it again. I missed Crownfarmer and the creative outlet it came to be for my friends and I and I’m glad that that one really bad experience (based on one really big mistake in judgement on my part) is just something to learn from and not do again. I don’t want to let one asshole ruin this thing I created. The multiple fiascos with Urban Outfitters, read more here and here are one thing, not total business killers, but it’s things like this that I guess we just need to learn from and keep moving forward.

Q-Now that you’ve made the decision to resurrect the brand what are your goals for it, both short and long term?
A-The short term goal for Crownfarmer is to release one t-shirt per week designed by a Club Mumbler and sold direct mailorder… for the next few hundred weeks. Long term might be to actually make the jump from a t-shirt company into a clothing company, but we’ll see what happens.

Q-tell us more about this first design that you are launching with….
A- The first week’s tee was designed by Todd Bratrud, owner of Teenage Runaway wheel company whose illustrative work I’ve always really enjoyed. There’s a quick interview with him up on the site a few posts ago, every week we’ll be doing quick ones with each artist.

Q-Do you want to take this opportunity to drop a few other names or are they hush hush?
A-The way it’s going to work with the weekly designs are that the people are all Club Mumblers…

Go Bob go!!!

Coffee, anyone?

September 28, 2009

1916214

The only thing better than doing something awesome yourself is seeing your friends being able to do the same. Come to think about it, that’s probably what makes Club Mumble pretty damn enjoyable - reading up on awesome people, doing equally awesome things.

Without lamenting too much here, a few months ago, one of my favorite humans on earth opened a coffee shop.  Ever since I have known Sam, he’s only been into two things: skateboarding first, and over the past few years, coffee, so needless to say it’s been mega exciting to see both come together.  There’s something to be said about people who just go for it, and bring a level of true craftsmanship to whatever they do.  It’s pretty rare these days (outside of this site of course.

If you’re ever around Toronto, make sure you pop by Sam James Coffee Bar.  Grab yourself an espresso, maybe even pick up a finely made Alena skateboard, and hang out.  Warning though: it’s a wi-fi dead zone, so if you get weirded out by talking to people, you might wanna polish up on them social skills right now.

Oh yah, you can read up about Sam’s joint right here, here and here.
