Yong-ki is Cool

December 29, 2009

Every now and then an oddly shaped box shows up at the door and we immediately know that it is something special. My good friend Yong-Ki from Solitary Arts sent me this skateboarding history gem, and I am waaay grateful for it because it is a deadstock resurrection of my very first Free Former skateboard that was the catalyst in teaching me the ways of the skate. It’s pretty awesome to ride on one of these again- and I was surprised by the reminder that skate technology has come a very long way. Thanks again Yong-Ki! To know Billy Kahn is to absolutely love him. I can honestly say i am who i am today because of Billy and i know for a fact that im one of  MANY people that can proudly say that! A while back Billy moved up to Portland OR to dive face first ( the only way he knows how ) into his dream of starting his own wood shop. Its no big shocker that he got it all rolling pretty damn quick, when Billy has his mind set on something you damn well better believe hes gonna make it happen and then some!

Have a look at Billys HOLDFAST WOODSHOP website and why not get him to build you something!? The way is see it, anything Billy does is pure skateboarding… all the passion he has for everything he creates stems from his love for skateboarding, if you have ever met Billy you know this to be true… spread the good word!!

pimp your iPhone…

December 27, 2009

got an iPhone? if not maybe its time you got one if for no other reason than to lace it with one of these cases…

mumble_iphones

the good people at Uncommon hit me up to do some art for these things and from what i can tell its a pretty slick opperation. you can pick the art you want ( dosnt have to be MY art, there is a grip of good stuff on their site ), rotate it, scale it, make it fit your case the way YOU want it to. i believe i have 9 graphics on there you can pick from. go have a look around and if you are in the zone, swoop a new case for your iPhone…

I just got back from a Christmas in PA. The pics turned out pretty great. I’ll be posting more of the crazy stuff I saw there on Design is People within the next week.

“WHY IS KID CUDI SUCH A…”

December 23, 2009

For all of you Americans reading this I first need to preface this post by telling you about my favourite journalist, Nardwuar The Human Serviette. Nardwuar is essentially a national treasure here in Canada, he’s a longtime celebrity interviewer who has sat down with folks like Kurt Cobain, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Michael Moore, Henry Rollins, David Cross and countless others. His style of interviewing is a bit in-your-face, essentially he spends weeks researching his subjects before their interview and pulls out some of the most obscure references to things from their past which he interrogates them about. Sometimes offsetting, always entertaining, search through his SITE to see a bunch of archives of stuff he’s done. The Pharrell one is especially great as he truly understands Nardwuar’s awesomeness.

So on to it here…

I’ve been working with Nardwuar a bit lately, helping him film some of his interviews. The latest one that I filmed for him with Kid Cudi has made some waves and just landed on Perez Hilton’s site (no thanks to me, as my interview filming skills are lackluster at best and I believe that Nardwuar only calls me when nobody else is available). I’ll let the video do the talking but will say that one of the recurring questions I’ve fielded since this came out is “Why is Kid Cudi such a douche?”. Enjoy the video in the link below!

FIRST PHOTOS VIDEO

December 22, 2009

I recently sat on the panel for Push.ca’s First Photos contest that Mumble co-sponsored (CLICK to see the results etc). Dylan Doubt from Color Magazine and Brian Caissie from Concrete Magazine and I sat down for coffees on a couple of occasions making our way through the hundreds of photo entries send in by kids from across Canada and beyond. Saying it was incredibly fun to sit down with these two friends of mine would be an understatement but that’s not to say that it wasn’t difficult. The amount of entries was so vast and the amount of really good entries was surprising, it was super hard for us to come to decisions in each of the 5 winning categories, especially for the grand prize winner. But in the end we were solid in our decisions for all including Mike Helfrich’s winning photo in the Overall category, which you can see right HERE.

Push just published a video of Mike’s trip to Toronto, the First Photos show and his shoot that he did with the Vans team as a part of the prize, click below to view it…

Big thanks to Matt, Lyndsey and everybody at Push.ca for involving us in this awesome contest!

Nikon Festival Entry: New York State of Mind

December 22, 2009

It’s been a while since I’ve posted because I don’t feel like I’ve had anything really very exciting to report. But times, they is a changin’!

Last night I found out that the film I submitted for the Nikon Festival was selected as one of the 50 finalists out of over 1200 entries. I was super hyped and didn’t get much sleep to say the least! Now, here’s where you come in…There’s an audience award based on the (number of views) multiplied by (the star rating), so please click to watch the video below, or follow this link: New York State of Mind and then click on the 5th star to the right underneath the title to rate my entry. Tell yo friends, to tell they friends and we can all be friends…

Thank you very much!

Trippe’s Old Tapes

December 21, 2009

johnandjimmy

John Trippe (left) with Porous Walker. Years ago before he started Fecal Face Dot Com, John used to film skaters doing the stuntwood voodoo on the streets of San Francisco. He recently starting going through his old tapes and posted this gem of some Paul Shier footage from 1997(?). hopefully he’ll be posting more footage as time passes, he shot for 411 and others. 2010 should be a big year for Fecal as well; it’s been 10 years since he started it as a zine.
