The Side Project

February 28, 2010

elo-safe

I don’t know how many of you all know Lisa Whitaker (pictured above doing a pebble induced belly flop on concrete in the name of skateboard videography) or have seen her site ‘The Side Project‘ but you oughta do both if you can!   She has done more for women and girls in skateboarding than anybody else that I know of.  I met her with the other Villa Villa Cola girls way back in 97 I think?  She had a huge library of skate footage perfectly archived and organized, I think she was shooting for 411 then?  We were blown away by her unending  devotion to documenting skateboarders’ feats of daring, both ladies and gentleman.  All of this time she has consistently and loyally been documenting female skateboarding and over the years has established a really incredible resource ‘The Side Project: A Girls’ Skateboarding Network.’  Nobody else is supporting female skateboarders the way she does and I think she deserves some love!  Just wanted to give you all a chance to have a look at the bounty of skateboarding coverage she provides: http://www.thesideproject.com/

February 25, 2010

Okay, I’m a bit late on this one. But, it’s still really worth watching if you haven’t already (and, then you can get sucked into the other commentaries that are featured).

Anyways, point your mouse here to spend some time with Slap, Strubs and Dan Peterka.

Filmer: 0, Security Guy: 1

February 24, 2010

While I was sitting around at Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa, Jimmy Lannon and crew rolled through. When they were getting kicked out by the security guard, the filmer that was with them said, “You’re just a fake ass cop.” The security guard said, “You’re just a fake ass skateboarder.” That was the best comeback I ever heard from security. High five, fat guy. Thanks for the laugh.

Ice-T Shot Me In The Face

February 22, 2010

ice-t-shot-me-rap-music-11

Paul Labonte recently published a lil’ gem called “Ice-T shot me in the face & eleven other stories about rap music.”  This pocket book features a decade of previously un-publishable stories from music journalist Luke Fox.

Here’s a little snippet about the book:

Forget reading that four line blog post about Lil Wayne for a minute, and direct your attention to the first book from Toronto based freelance music journalist Luke Fox. This is perhaps the furthest thing from the inane, regurgitated micro-posting that music writing has become, with 12 feature length stories centered on some of raps finest, complete with subtle illustrations by Jeremy Wirth. Fox narrates up close and personal encounters with Kool G Rap, Ghostface Killah, Nas, Kanye West, Common and more, capturing their personalities with a well informed wit and style.

After spending 10 years as a staff writer and editor for Pound Magazine, Fox stockpiled a wealth of interviews with emcees, producers, and DJs, experience that shows in his fluid and confident writing. Ice-T Shot me in the Face & Eleven Other Stories About Rap Music is first and foremost written by a fan, offering a refreshingly hearty helping of edutainment, and a welcome departure from the new world of fast food music journalism.
