Kinetic Skateboarding

April 26, 2010

Much like The Jefferson’s before them, Kinetic skate shop is moving on up to the east side and, to celebrate in style, they’re throwing a grand re-opening BBQ and mini-ramp jam/demo with the crew from 5Boro. Word on the street is a few other pros will be making their way to the First State to get in on the action but you’ll have to be there to find out who. Things get cooking at high noon, this Saturday, May 1st, so if you’re anywhere in the DE/MD/NJ/East PA vicinity, definitely drop by. Kinetic’s always been a strong supporter of the local scene, from their work with the Wilmington Skate Project to the Philly warehouse & POPs skatepark to just throwing weekend skate jams for the locals, so I’m stoked to see them moving over to a bigger location and finally getting a piece of the pie.  Congrats boys. Sponsored by Etnies, Altamont, és, Traffic, Spitfire and Emerica. Get directions here.

MR PHOEBUS

April 26, 2010

bowler1

I am a huge fan of ‘zines; I have collected them from artists all over the world. I think there is something special about a little book that is handmade, and full of ideas and concept that perhaps didn’t fit into any other format or function. You don’t need a publishing contract or commercial funding; it’s completely DIY and open to your own interpretation.

This is my latest Zine titled, Mr Phoebus, which is inspired by Sir Edward Elgar, who affectionately nicknamed his Royal Sunbeam bicycle “Mr Phoebus”. It was on his long rides over the English countryside that Edward Elgar found his inspiration to create new melodies and orchestral tunes.

I love my bike, and especially love the way it can make me feel so free. Instead of only printing up a limited edition of 150, I wanted to share this with everyone… Please click the link for a free PDF download of  my newest zine; ‘Mr Phoebus’.

Deckades Exhibition - Bristol.

April 24, 2010

.

Howies asked a bunch of their favourite artists to create some one-off hand decorated boards that could be auctioned to raise funds for Unicef. They gave each of them an original 1980’s blank deck from Shiner’s private collection and let them do their thing.

The boards are all being sold on eBay here with all proceeds going to Unicef.

Artists involved include Jim Phillips, Geoff McFetridge, Pete Fowler, French, Kev Grey, Will Barras, Mr Jago, China Mike, Marcus Oakley, Andy J Miller, Chris Bourke, Mr Bingo, Bowlegs, Millie Marotta, Gav Strange, Danny Wainwright, Jethro Haynes and Nigel Peakes.

Read a review of the show and an interview with Jim Phillips on UK site, Caught in The Crossfire over here.

Montana Skatepark’s ON Deck 5

April 23, 2010

I recently donated a custom painted skate deck to the Montana Skatepark Association’s 5th Annual On Deck benefit art auction. The MSA has been raising money and building skateparks for the Montana locals since 2000 and they’re a great organization and a real supporter of their local scene. The auction just went live this morning and I must say I was pretty blown away by some of the boards - especially Adam Haynes’ Lost Trail Snowstorm, which is sick. Anyway, click here to view the image gallery and to make a bid to help out the cause. The online bidding ends at 3:00 pm on May 7th and I believe all pieces start at $75, which is a steal so get on it. And for more information on the MSA, click here.
