The official death of film?

August 18, 2010

French Fred, you’re going to hate me for this.

I recently inherited an amazing Dacora from my late grandfather. Immediately after receiving it I shot a photo of it (below) on my smartphone with the Retro Camera app I installed on it, then mused over the fact that I might never put actual film into this heirloom. I also thought about the fact that most people who are using this app have never loaded a roll of 120 film in their life… and never will. Thoughts?

From the Archives: Cards

August 16, 2010

Nearly 15 years ago I came across a photo of Cards in the magazine (I think it was Thrasher, but I could be wrong) where he was holding this mourning dove and had a big grin in typical Cardiel style. It was awesome and really stuck out to me so I tried to redraw it back when I was first learning to draw portraits. John Cardiel was one of my favorite skaters then, and he still is today. It’s obvious that this rendition was from my sloppy memory… and for some reason I took the liberty of adding braces to his already well-arranged grill. Maybe I had braces at the time? I’m kind of embarrassed at how I drew him and that I don’t even remember who took the photo but I still think it’s kind of cool.

Empty Eggs

August 13, 2010

deshi

I’ve got some art going up in Tokyo this week with one of my all time favorite people, Mr. Simon True. I have a couple regular drawings in there, but mainly these collaborative pieces my friend Tim Fielder and I did that I’m really proud of. For these I did ink drawings on top of his photos, combined them digitally and got them printed B1 poster size on this awesome Japanese paper. Then we mounted them to big panels and had a surfboard maker coat em in that clear fiberglass that seals surfboards, so each one is a really high quality original. Simon will be doing  live painting at the gallery on the 22nd, and if I can get a ticket I’ll be there doing some live drinking.

Click for flyer, here is the gallery’s site and email me if you’re randomly in town and don’t read Japanese.

Time is running out….

August 13, 2010

owoa-poster

Just a quick reminder – this Sunday, August 15,is the last day for the We Are Contributors One Way or Another online art auction. So, if you’re interested in getting a custom piece of skateboard art from Don Pendleton,Tony Larson, Todd Francis, Michael Sieben, Porous Walker, Amber B, myself or any of the other amazing artists involved, get on that pronto or risk major regret.  Plus proceeds go toward giving free skateboards to kids from lower income families in Canada, so it’s money well spent. And $150 for a custom, one of a kind piece of art made especially for you, is really a good deal, so take advantage of the recession and purchase some art on the cheap. Click here to make it happen.
