Spring/Summer Quiet Life

A long time buddy of mine, Jason Filipow, has been tireless in his collaged and screenprinted artwork. His newest piece, Taliban Don’t Surf, is here just in time for Happy Birthday America! An explanation of the print from the artist:
“Taking inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s monumental war film, Apocalypse Now, as well as the song Charlie Don’t Surf by The Clash, JRF’s Taliban Don’t Surf presents a topical narrative infused with politically-charged rhetoric. It parodies western stereotypes while questioning the ambiguous motives of the US military occupation along border of Pakistan/Afghanistan.” – JRF
Lots of details and high craftsmanship in all of his work.

My favorite band on my good friends Playbutton “label”, the badges that have a playable mp3 album on them. Great video.
The closing party for Upon Some Distant Shore will be this Friday (July 1st). Be sure to stop through Black Book Gallery if you are in the area for a tour of John Fellows’ latest renderings and meanderings of places near and far. And for the zine fans, he has a 60 page zine that will blow your socks off, get one here.

I have had this mix from my good friend Nat over at A Silent Flute for a while now, and it is the
perfect summer time mix, a daily rotation. Super inspiring. It starts with this ZWOL song.
So. Good.
Whole mix here.
I just received my copy of Modern Atlanta from MA Creative Director and Arm Chair Media Art Director, Kevin Byrd. I am always bummed that I miss this event goes every summer. Hopefully next year I will plan ahead and attend.
Modern Atlanta is a great group that focuses on the human side of design, which is a side that is often-times overlooked. They have created a great network of like-minded designers, artists, architects and general modern design enthusiasts since their inception in 2007. The modern home tour is a great event to launch the summer.

The MAKE IT COUNT contests by Element is an amazing series of grass-root events that finishes at Skate Camp every summer for its finals… The contest winners from each event, from around the world, come together once a year to skate together at Skate Camp. It’s an incredible experience, as you’re immersed within all things skateboarding; creativity, energy, ingenuity, and positivity.
This is the highlight video of the actual contest, which was ridiculous, considering these are un-sponsored kids who are skating at pro-level status. Check back soon, as I’ll be putting together a recap video of the year’s events and personalities.
I was going through some old stuff and found this drawing that I did and I thought some of you might get a laugh out of it. I don’t really have to explain that it’s a play on the band name Suicidal Tendencies do I? www.salvadorgnarly.com
