Sink Or Swim SF

September 18, 2011

Sink Or Swim
September 23-25, 2011
Opening reception Friday, September 23rd 6-10pm

Spoke Art Gallery
816 Sutter St.
SF, CA

This coming Friday, September 23rd, Japan-based non-profit PangeaSeed in collaboration with San Francisco’s Spoke Art Gallery is pleased to announce the inaugural transcontinental art exhibition, Sink or Swim, featuring original works from 30 internationally renowned artists such as Dave Kinsey, Josh Keyes, Dan May, Jim Phillips, Skinner and many more (like me!). This gathering of widely acclaimed artists from around the globe will address one of the biggest threats facing the health of the world’s oceans today – the rapid and mass depletion of sharks.

I’ve seen some of these pieces and must say they are pretty awesome. I am honored to be included in such a lineup of great artists and helping a great cause. Their will be an opening reception from 6pm-10pm on Friday so you should be there! Support a great cause and see (and possibly buy) some amazing art. Above is the flyer designed by all-around good guy Aaron Glasson and my new piece. If you can’t make it, tell your friends to go. See you there!

Of mice and Bens: Schroeder’s great attic adventure

September 16, 2011

Ben Schroeder’s Monrovia house is still the stuff of legends. Until recently, the whole last floor was his and, well, he made it his, big time. Weird skateboards of all sizes all over. Paperwork, memorabilia, skatepark plans, shoes in various states of usage, sculpted or carved skatepark models. A true Ali Baba’s cave, from which he could extract virtually dozens of different skateboards from any given corner. Each one being interesting and having a story to tell. So no, isolating only five wasn’t an easy task but eventually, it did happen. After much debate, “the guy who does eggplants like nobody else” unfolded his carcass of locomotivesque proportions to talk about his five picks, among other souvenirs including how he got kicked out of Dogtown in 1991 (he sent them a letter saying they were turning the company into H Street and that they should rename it H-Town or Dog-Street) and how he earned the nickname “Ben10? after perfect 10 runs at some 1986 contest. It’s all on Memory Screened

NATHANIEL RUSSELL

September 14, 2011

Art Park presents “Phantom Moments” by their first US artist resident, Nathaniel Russell on Friday, September 23.

Nathaniel makes drawings, prints, and paintings of mysterious figures, imaginary books and posters, primitive character study, dream thoughts, and references to our common subconscious connections. His prints and drawings have been exhibited internationally in numerous solo, group, and traveling exhibitions in cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, London, and Tokyo. Zines of his drawings have been published by small presses in Scotland, Canada, and Germany. If you happen to be in the beautiful Byron Bay, go check it out.

Sam & Jai

A few years ago my friend Sam Milianta sent me a roll of film that he had already shot photos on and asked me to shoot over what he had shot? It turned out so rad that we decided to ask some other like minded film shooting friends ( Joe Brook, Greg Hunt and Mark Whiteley ) to join in! here is a few of the photos and some link to all the photos on the film por vida site!

Enjoy!

PEARL C. HSIUNG’S GUSHER AT VINCENT PRICE ART MUSEUM SEPT 16TH

September 13, 2011

Pretty stoked to see Pearl’s solo show which opens this Friday, September 16th at the Vincent Price Art Museum.  Hope to see you all there!!!

Los Angeles-based artist Pearl C. Hsiung’s diverse practice in painting, sculpture and video is being featured in a large-scale solo show. Gusher will include more than 40 works produced between 2003 and the present, and is the largest survey, to date, of the artist’s oeuvre. Hsiung’s strikingly colorful paintings are infused with a popular culture aesthetic ranging from sci-fi movies and television shows to album covers and even 1960s psychedelia. Many of her meticulously rendered works blur the boundary between landscape and portraiture; in her paintings, sculpture and video, it is common to see lips and teeth on mountaintops or clouds, and cacti wearing scarves or bandanas. The artist transforms what for most are seemingly straightforward scenes of nature: a skyline, a desert vista, or a volcano, into dense, nonsensical, comical, and provocative images of the outdoors. A full-color brochure with essay by Catherine Taft accompanies the show.

By The Pale Moonlight – 1975 Gallery’s Three Year Anniversary.

September 13, 2011

BY THE PALE MOONLIGHT - Opens Saturday, October 8, 2011

BY THE PALE MOONLIGHT
Ghosts, Ghouls, and other Creatures of the Night
1975 x Surface Salon’s Three Year Anniversary show.
October 8 – November 5, 2011

Opening Night: Saturday, October 8, 2011, from 7-10pm

It’s been three AWESOME years since I started 1975 and partnered up with my friend Lee at Surface salon to start showcasing artists in Rochester, and now we can’t just contain the party to the old space. We’re going to kick off our next year by welcoming a brand new art space into our family, and this one is a doozy!

To make it even more special, we’ve reached out to an INCREDIBLE roster of talented artists to help us make this show even more memorable than our previous shows. (Check www.1975ish.com for the full listing)

The event will be on the third floor above Flour City Bakery, in Rochester’s brand new art space (whose name will be revealed that night), located in the Rochester Public Market, 280 Union St. North, Rochester, NY 14609.

Use the Union St. entrance to the Public Market, and the entrance to the space is immediately to the left of Flour City Bakery. There are two flights of stairs.

Cat Rabbit

September 11, 2011

Up until about a year ago if you had ever told me that one day I’d be completely in love with the work of a plush figure artist I would have said ‘You really should stop smoking crack dude, it’s super bad for you.’

But then I met Cat Rabbit and that changed. Check out her site and say hi! She’s real nice. Also she’s in a show this Friday here in Melbourne at Outre gallery if you’re in town.
