Hello Family & Friends,
I have been working around the clock for my SUMMERWINTER exhibition which opens in LA on Friday, July 16th. Everything is coming together beautifully, and I can’t wait to show you all what I have created!
Kirk has been working on a beautiful short film that narrates the story of the art show, and it’s set to a soundtrack composed by Loren Humphrey.
I would also like to thank all the amazing people who have helped in preparation for this exhibition:
Jeremy Mora for his beautiful gallery; POVevolving, Todd Rogers for sound engineering, Matt Tammariello for sound effects, Loren Humphrey for the soundtrack, Luis Ramirez for printing help, Honest Tea and PBR for the drinks, Nylon TV for the coverage, and a very special thank you to Element for all your love and support!
Our goal is to raise $500 for Elemental Awareness, which is an organization that reaches out to under-privileged kids through skateboarding and wilderness skills. I created a limited edition of 10 hand-sewn, hand-screened totes that are packed with goodies from our sponsors, and will be sold to raise money for EA.
Inside each tote is an AB zine from the exhibition, an organic Element T-shirt, and an Element Eden wallet, along with stickers, Honest Tea drinks, and a copy of Nylon… So the first ten people to donate $50 will recieve one of these limited edition, hand made, gift bags.
I will also be launching a special line of ombré dyed scarves, which are grade 50, 100% Cheese cloth that will thread the exhibition together by combining black and white, to make grey.
New ‘zines are hot of the press, and will also be available! (If you’re a self-publisher & zine fan, bring yours to the show and we’ll swap!)
Lastly, check out this interview by fellow Mumbler, Isaac McKay-Randozzi at Juxtapoz!
Thank you, and I hope to see you there!

I am having an exhibition on July 16th at the POVevolving Gallery in LA entitled SUMMERWINTER.
I began thinking about the SUMMERWINTER concept about a year ago. It was a natural seasonal progression after my Autumn inspired show at colette in Paris. I wanted to convey the way that seasons are different in the Northern and Southern hemispheres, and how opposites attract… That feeling that one could not exist without the other, and that things all become one in the end.
For this show, I took a minimalist approach in my work, which was inspired by my husband. I have always been about color, but in this show I kept the pallet strictly to black, white and grey. I also experimented with other textiles and media for this show… Along with my sewn creatures, I created a limited edition Ombré dyed scarf to symbolize black and white becoming one (grey). My husband and I also created a short film that will be shown at the exhibition.
The entire show centers around a single love story between the characters Summer andWinter, who fall in love. Even though they live on opposite sides of the world, they consummate their love, and perform a seasonal dance of love for eternity.

Four hours north-east of LA is a sacred piece of heaven. It’s 5400 feet above sea level, and the Sequoia trees grow so high that you can barely see their top branches.
Over the weekend was the MAKE IT COUNT contest series, in the Sequoia National Park at theYMCA Element Skate Camp. It’s a place where kids come to learn how to survive in the wilderness, how to succeed in life, and how to skate their best.
Visually, Skate Camp is absolutely beautiful. Audibly, there were accents from all over the world… Contestants came from Portugal, Canada, Australia, and cities throughout the United States. And Element’s international offices came out to cheer for their respected regions, as Element Europe, Japan, and Australia were in attendance.
Prior to the contest, we hiked to Stony Creek where the Europe crew, Guy (from Portugal), Levi Brown, and a few skaters were the only ones brave enough to swim in the icy waters.
Todd Larson and Matt Luciani from Elemental Awareness taught us survival techniques, how to make shelter, create our own utensils with hot coals and wood, and make fire from only the bare essentials. Nevertheless, our European brethren Phil and Christian came through with the goods by making the best looking spoons!
Late at night we got to hang out next to the camp fire, where Guy tried to scare us with his Black Bear impersonation, which was met with rolling laughter instead of screams! Hehe… Thanks for the laughs Guy!.

Element just released its new line of skate obstacles, called “DROP SPOT”. We shot the commercial series in San diego at the Transworld warehouse.
Kirk Dianda, Ricki Bedenbaugh and Marc Falkenstien directed and shot the commercials together. The stars of the shoot were Chad Tim Tim, Vanessa Torres, Julian Davidson, Lacey Baker and Levi Brown, plus Ryan Dewitt who kept everyone out of trouble.
It was a long day of shooting, but the end result, edited by Kirk Dianda, looks really cool. Check out the commercial here or catch it on FUEL, and below are some behind-the-scenes photos from the day.

It’s the Maloof Money Cup weekend in New York City, and last night was the opening night of ”LOVE & GUTS” art exhibition. Oakley, Thrasher, Red Bull, and Juxtapoz brought together a diverse group of artists to exhibit their work, which were dedicated to fellow skaters that have passed away.
Kirk and I filmed the installation, so keep an eye out for the short film, which will be released soon.
Pictured above, Don Pendleton stands in front of two of his pieces that were featured. Click here for more portraits of the other artists involved…

The Love & Guts Art Show, presented by Oakley, Juxtapoz and Thrasher, is set to make its return to New York City with a specially themed show entitled Eyes Wide Open. After touring the show in Wellington, New Zealand and Bondi Beach, Australia earlier this year, Love & Guts hits New York City on Friday the 4th of June.
The exhibition is centered around celebrating the lives of skaters that left us far too soon. Although gone physically, the impressions left by them have lived on, and to further immortalize them, Eyes Wide Open comes to street skating’s mecca, New York City, for what promises to be the largest Love & Guts exhibition to date.
The show historically has been centered around the art of skating legends Lance Mountain, Pat Ngoho, Steve Caballero and Steve Olson, but has gone on to include many other skaters from skating’s past and present. For Eyes Wide Open NYC, the show enlisted the talents of Chad Muska, Armando Roura, Don Pendelton, Giovanni Reda, Dennis McNett and Ivory & Shelter Serra whose work will be accompanying that of Mountain, Ngoho, Caballero and Olson.
We met up with Pat Ngoho, Lance Mountain and Steve Caballero recently… Check out this clip filmed by Kirk Dianda of Steve Caballero talking about Love & Guts.
