Breathing Underwater stop motion animation

July 28, 2010

screen-shot-2010-07-28-at-100914-pm

Sorry folks, I looked like it was a live video, but it’s a photo. Scion put the video up at flickr for some reason! Either way, this is the first stop motion project I ever did and it’s a collab with Saelee Oh who held my hand through it. I’ve since done another. Imagine this is 6 frames a second and if we had done 10, it would be a ton smoother. Next time, I’ll probably up it to 12 or something like that. Hope you have a sec to check it out. It’s only a minute.

North Korean Captive Laura Ling and sister Lisa Ling at Giant Robot July 17

July 15, 2010

lauralisab

This is quite cool. It’s their only signing and they’ll be together signing this book at Giant Robot GR2 this saturday. The book is one of the few I read this year and it tells the crazy story of how Laura and Production producer Euna Lee were captured by North Korea and became political pawns for months. This book tells Laura’s side of the story. It’s cool to see both sisters write about their ordeals. One being stuck, the other being outside pulling every string possible to get her sister out. If you’re down, this is a cool book to get signed, etc.

David Choe Munko Whales!

July 15, 2010

munkocolor

David Choe Munko whales! There’s 12 types, they’re blind box… They took a while to get done and now hopefully, you’ll find them soon at a shop near you. But you can pre-order them first here: We’ll have them ahead of time. I’m pretty proud of these figures. Making toys is a tough business, and I think that’s why you see a lot less of these types of toys being made. They’re either super expensive, or super low quality, but these are quite cool and not expensive and high quality!

The Big Boss Robot Stop Motion animation

July 11, 2010

I made this stop motion animation. It’s the second time I’ve tried it. The first time, it was a lot different. 6 frames per second. This is 10 frame per second project which is a huge improvement in quality. I’d suggest this. I have no idea if people are going to like this toy figure which is a blind box item, but I do hope so. It’s tough to get hype for certain projects, but I thought that doing something like this couldn’t hurt. In the end, this was supposed to be a commercial, and I had no choice but to DIY. We can’t afford a cent to pay someone to make something like this, so I had to make a crazy effort to do this in a night or two. Hope you like it.

James Jean Trailer for the Giant Robot Biennale 2

October 10, 2009

I cut this on iMovie. That’s a handy program that’s really easy to use compared to final cut. I shot this with a cheap Flip Cam. If you’re in LA, come out to the show, I’m working hard on it all. www.giantrobot.com/biennale

In Walks Ray Barbee

September 25, 2009

r00418001

Ray Barbee is the coolest guy and now, he’s super into photography. I mean not just a little, but hardcore crazy details. Processing times, printing tricks and papers, and so much more. When Ray gets into something, he’s super into it. It was fun to hang out and see him get so into talking about photo!

Giant Robot mag and store on NBC in LA.

August 21, 2009

Here’s a link to Giant Robot on NBC TV. Surprising they did a piece lasting more than a minute, and it shows how dorky we really are. If I could embed video, I’d do it for ya.

Yeti’s Best at Wholefoods.

July 5, 2009

r0039835

Pop Culture continues in vegetables and fruit. I’m at Wholefoods and I see these proudly displayed underneath the fruit. It’s part of the shops look, and temporary at that. Lesson: design your boxes nicely, and you might get a little bit of advertising for your farm, out of it all. Yeti’s Best? It looks like a Michael Leon design. Put the Yeti on a skateboard and you have it.

Niku Jaga

July 1, 2009

r00397921People think Japanese folk eat nothing but veggies and fish, but they’re also meat and potatoes people too. Here’s the dish. Niku Jaga.

It literally means meat and potatoes. It’s a common dish in Japan. I made it for the first time, and I’ll report it’s quite easy to make and is a crowd pleaser. Of course, it takes some adjustments to get right. Not enough soysauce, too much cooking sake, mirin, etc. Try this one and eat it over a few days.
