Niku Jaga

July 1, 2009

r00397921People think Japanese folk eat nothing but veggies and fish, but they’re also meat and potatoes people too. Here’s the dish. Niku Jaga.

It literally means meat and potatoes. It’s a common dish in Japan. I made it for the first time, and I’ll report it’s quite easy to make and is a crowd pleaser. Of course, it takes some adjustments to get right. Not enough soysauce, too much cooking sake, mirin, etc. Try this one and eat it over a few days.

Graffiti with a smile

June 18, 2009

r0039503

There’s not enough graffiti that makes me smile. I know there’s an ethical code of being hard, but that doesn’t do enough for me. I saw this on Alameda Blvd in Downtown LA. If there were more of these, I think there’d be less honking and angry people. Who did these?

Owl Beer Hitachino Nest

May 21, 2009

r0038624

I don’t know too much about Beer, but this bottle was too cool to pass up to photograph. It says Hitachino Nest. Kiuchi Brewery. I don’t know what this one tastes like, but I’m sure it’s good. It’s White Ale. Next time, I’m going to get one… The price is sort of steep.

Anyone taste this one?

Wave filmed like this for the first time?

May 7, 2009

wave…

It seems like Waves get filmed all the time. This one is from below. This can’t be the first time, right? Either way, it’s relaxing to see images of waves in slow motion.

The young artist out of LA drew an image of me being interviewed. His sketchbook is an amazing thing.

Takoyaki

April 18, 2009

r0037604

Anyone ever try to make this? It’s originally from the Kansai area of Japan. Osaka. It’s basically a pastry like item, although it’s a savory food with a piece of octopus in it. It’s a favorite in Osaka, although you get it all over Japan. Not many places actually make this in the Americas… So, it’s a home cooked special.

r0037607

I’m still trying to figure this all out. At first “draft” it was a bit thin, the balls actually deflated instead of inflated which means, either not enough flour or baking powder. I’m not adept here, so it’s a trial and error, but it tasted decent… I’ll get back to you on draft 2.

Hello Henry Rollins

March 12, 2009

Henry Rollins
I thought I looked odd, but Henry looked odd too. I remember him looking huge and muscular. But he was thinner than I thought in person. Henry was actually cool and gave me a lesson on how to handle a “red carpet” situation. I put a photo up on my flickr account, and quickly someone asked if I wanted to include the photo into a group called “Hello Henry“. It’s pics of people with Henry. Weird. I guess I’m weird too.

Giant Robot x Shin Tanaka Paper Robot Contest

February 27, 2009

giantrobotshin

Hi there readers. What is this image? It’s an open contest. It seems like it might be a tough one, but really all you have to do is submit a color way for the leg robot. Which is the bottom part. The submissions are cruising along, but at the moment, you have a high submission to win (there are prizes in the continue) ratio and it’s due March 6. Which is coming up.

Here’s the pertinent info you’ll need to get this going.

1. Download the blank template.
2. Customize the template with your own designs — draw, paint, use photoshop — be creative!
3. Scan or color copy your customized template and save it to upload later.
4. Construct your figure and take a photo of the completed piece.
5. By March 6, upload your scanned template and image of the completed figure using the link below.
6. Upload.
7. Winners will be announced on the site by March 11th.
