GISS IMPROV - flourishes in the poetry of each individual.

November 29, 2009

gimprov22The Gulf Islands Secondary School performed in the Exhibition round of the Canadian Improv Games, South Vancouver Island, this past Friday night. They certainly brought a playful intensity as they rocked a frantic Theme event filled with group games and zoom edits, a Character event about a passive/aggressive fire chief with a past, contents under pressure, and a beautiful story event where Merlin’s evil brother’s journal was found in an attic and then returned to him in a finale of fire and magic. Great work! These improvisors are amazing listeners and are on the verge of becoming a chorus of coryphaeuses.

Our next performance is at the Salt Spring Island invitational show on Jan. 8th and then the loving competition starts on Jan. 15th in Victoria.

We are working on a Bouffon style event and hope that it comes to life. We were lucky to have a workshop with Catriona Leger on Thursday and look forward to taking it back to the laboratory in the few short weeks between now and the Kwanzaa-Hanukkah-Christmas break.

GISS IMPROV is now hiring a full-time professional designer to help collage together pictures of our field trips and performances in a way that is aesthetically arresting and shines a light on our enthusiasm and group mind.

GISS Improv is ready for a new year.

November 6, 2009

We have seen things that we don’t want Terry to see yet. But this is going to be a fun-filled year. Here we are on our way to the all team’s meeting and the start of a new year of improv and inspiration.

The GISS Improv team is excited to begin a new year with the Canadian Improv Games. I plan to follow our adventures here on Mumble Magazine. Stay tuned for the next installment when we perform in the X-Rounds in a couple of weeks - theme event and two of Story, Style or character - Nov. 27 in Esquimalt along with teams from that school, Claremont and Oak Bay. BOOM.

We have been proud participants in the Canadian Improv Games for the past six years, including two trips to the national tournament in Ottawa. The CIG is an amazing organization and these improvisors are ready to attack the stage and discover moments filled with captivating characters while creating beautiful stories and sensitively redefining man’s place in the universe. I believe in cherishing fleeting and irreplaceable time, and every chance we get to improvise honours this and hopefully leads to another chance to improvise.

We perform in an amazing region. Last year’s national champs were Vancouver Island’s own GP Vanier from Courtenay.

Mini Quarterpipe Day Two

August 28, 2009

Phew, after a marathon day it’s (almost) ready to ride. I know I should save my family pictures for a different context but here we are. I still need to reinforce the back and fix the coping. I am a bit like a Dutchman building a ship in a bottle though because moving it to the driveway wasn’t easy. Now for those over-unders…

Mini Quarterpipe Day One

August 27, 2009

It’s been a long time in the planning and procrastination stages, but my older sons are now nine and seven years old so it is time to get started. I hope to show you day two before they graduate. My plan is to finish the joists and bracing and put the sheeting and coping on tomorrow. I should have it at the end of my driveway by day’s end. Stay tuned for the final update of my sons going over-under.
