“Beautiful Losers” Short Film Group Show
In the early 1990′s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders (which included Harmony Korine, Ed Templeton, Shepard Fairey, Mike Mills and Aaron Rose, among others) found common ground at a little Chinatown storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip-hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. In celebration of the DVD release of Beautiful Losers, Aaron Rose will be showcasing short films by key artists in his critically acclaimed documentary, as well as never-before-seen interviews with artists from the scene, sharing personal stories behind one of the most influential cultural moments of a generation.

Films scheduled include the world premiere of Harmony Korine’s new short film (culled from unused footage from his latest feature Trash Humpers!:

  • Harmony Korine - Mak & Plak
  • Mike Mills - Deformer
  • Cheryl Dunn - Mass Destruction
  • Chris Johanson - Encinitas Realization
  • Spike Jonze - How They Get There
  • Thomas Campbell - Exhaust
  • Clare Rojas - The Manipulators
  • Geoff McFetridge - There And Back

“Skate videos have been a big influence and a big part of what I’ve done for a long time. They are how I got into film actually. Instead of just showing the videos i’ve been a part of Patrick O’Dell (Epicly Later’d) is being kind enough to put together a program to cover the history of skate videos. How often are you going to get to see Fucktards at MOMA?” -Spike Jonze

October 14, 2009

Hey Im going to be talking about some skate videos I filmed at Spike Jonze’s retrospective at the MOMA tomorrow night.(Anti Hero, Fucktards and Stereo, A Visual Sound) I wanted to tell you about it and if you live close to New York please come by. Tobin
