Open Call at Slingluff Gallery

December 14, 2011

Like parks and recreation and helping out a good cause? If you answered “yes”, then you should check out Philadelphia based Slingluff Gallery’s (http://www.SlingluffGallery.com/) open call. They are putting on a fundraiser art show to help benefit Penn Treaty Park. In their own words “The park is down the street from the gallery, it’s a great little park on a river that hosts a ton of music, art, and other events through out the year so it feels good to be able to give them something back.” This isn’t your normal “art donation” benefit either. They want to make sure everyone involved gets something out of this.

The opening is going to be sponsored by Art In The Age (http://www.artintheage.com/) who will be providing Root and Snap for your drinking pleasure, granted that you are of drinking age. The opening will be on the first Saturday of January which is on the 7th and will run from 6-9p and the show will be hung till January 29th.

For more info and any questions regarding this group show please feel free to email them at: theslingluffgallery@gmail.com

ONE X ONE X ONE

December 7, 2011

I just saw a copy of this book published in conjunction with Three Sixty Project’s first annual skateboard deck exhibition in
Australia recently. The exhibition and book are raising funds for skate programs working with under-priveleged youth all
over the world and some photos I’ve taken while working with Skateistan Cambodia feature throughout.

The photos were all taken at Skateistan skate sessions in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and were used with permission from
Friends Int. Mith Samlanh centre and Pour un Sourire d’ Enfant (PSE)

For more information or to support the One X One X One project or Skateistan head to the links above.

Yarrr! X The Woods

December 4, 2011

Yarrr Woods Flyer

Tomorrow in Melbourne (Australia) there is an artshow/bar opening in Chapel St.

Yarrr! is an annual art show put on by my friend Micah. Apart from having original art work on display, he also prints the images onto Tshirts which will be for sale at the opening.

The Woods is a new restaurant which is being opened the guys who own The Yellow Bird, Melbourne’s favourite bar for skateboarders to be idiots at.

Scope Miami: The Process of Being Human

November 26, 2011
In recent years my work has focused more on sculpture, often using found materials to create new forms. These three dimensional pieces are almost an antidote to the hours spent working digitally.

I’ll be exhibiting at SCOPE for the second time this year where I have new work to be shown for the first time. The event takes place from November 29th until December 4th and celebrates 11 years of SCOPE, running concurrently this year with Art Basel Miami.

There are a few more images here on Flickr.

Forty Days in the Bardo

November 12, 2011

Last week, I stopped by the Fabric Workshop to check out Laurie Anderson’s multi-media installation, Forty Nine Days at the Bardo.  Spread over two floors and dedicated/influenced by the recent death of her dog, Lolabelle, it’s an intense tribute and discussion on loss as well as the deep spiritual connection between pets and their owners.  Consisting mainly of a series of 10′x14′ foot charcoal drawings detailing Lolabelle’s time in the Bardo (a forty-nine day period between death and rebirth, as mentioned in the Tibetan Book of the Dead), the scale of the work quickly engulfs the viewer, bringing you into this nether world of lucid dreams, bizarre illusions, touching realizations and ultimately, rebirth. The installation also features a sculpture of a violin, created from layers of mud, clay and the ashes of her dog. Now, I’m more of a cat person myslef but I did hear stories from the staff of more than a few dog lovers leaving the exhibit in tears, which speaks volumes more on the success of this installation than anything I could write.

I was most impressed by her Iron Mountain floor – an erily darkened space with a sparse collection of tiny clay figures, brought to life by video projections of people working, running and talking on them. They’re almost like holograms, and in the stillness of the room you get the feeling like you’re inside someone’s brain, browsing through a collection of their personal and intimate memories. Worth seeing in person for sure, as obviously a photograph or video won’t do something like this justice.

So don’t sleep on this one –  the exhibit runs until November 19th at the Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia.

Happy Hour with Amanda Clarke – 1975 Gallery

November 12, 2011

HAPPY HOUR – New Work by Amanda Clarke &
Re-Surface – The grand reopening of Surface Salon

November 12, 2011 – January 28th, 2012
Opening Reception Saturday November 12, 2011
7-10pm

I met Amanda YEARS ago through my work with KRUDCO. skateshop here in Rochester. She’s a Rochester native herself who’s been killing it in Boston for quite a few years now. When I had the chance to get her back her and offer her our first solo show at 1975, I was so stoked.

She’s back in town for the weekend, and we’re all going to celebrate her love of music, the perfectly mixed cocktail, and her graphic design heroes TONIGHT from 7-10pm!

For more on Amanda’s awesome illustration work, check out www.sparkyart.com
On Twitter: @SparkyArt
The Event: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181145695293408

And of course, you can always check out what we’re doing through 1975 at: www.1975ish.com
or on twitter: @1975ish

More samples of Amanda’s awesomeness:
