Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone by Sarah Larnach

Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone by Sarah Larnach

My friend and fellow Element advocate, Sarah Larnach, lives over in New Zealand, where there was some pretty gnarly earthquakes not so long ago. Here is an email that she sent out about this painting that she has donated which is currently being auctioned…

“Hello!

This is an email to let you know about a painting of mine being auctioned for charity, and I’ve emailed either because I think you might want to look, or maybe to bid, or because you-are-my-mum-Katy-and-I’ll-get-a-TellingOff -if-I-dont-tell-you-about-this.

So, earthquakes in Christchurch earlier this year were awful- many many lives lost and homes rendered unlivable. It was always going to be hard going for the people of Christchurch, especially recovering in the uncertainty of months of aftershocks.
And now… snow! So much snow.

The auction group that I have donated to is called The Easel Project; an initiative by some young artists to raise some cash for our Christchurch kin, in conjunction with The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army who have a Mobile Hot Shower Unit in operation in Christchurch, by the way- and THAT has really bought it home for me!
Yes, i know people need groceries and jobs, but.. hot showers! I can only imagine!   (though i dont want to imagine the post shower dash home through the snow. no, i really dont).

Without further ado, here is The Auction on Trade Me. The auction started ends on Friday the 26th.

the specs- ’Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone’, Sarah Larnach, February 2011
ORIGINAL painting.
Watercolour and gold ink on 600gsm paper. 39cm wide x 56cm tall

‘The giant moa has been extinct for about 250 years, but these massive birds were once the worlds largest. I’ve painted this moa in the style of a museum taxidermy guide, for my Wonder Cabinet (Wunderkammer) series. The special detail in this painting is the wishbone (which would be about 50cm tall on a Moa) , here symbolically painted in gold for hope and good wishes.  This is the first original piece in this series to go up for sale.

Please have a look at the auction, because even the browsing traffic can inspire the spenders!

Thank you,
Sarah Larnach”

Los Angeles Artists Map

August 19, 2011

Just finished up a project I’ve been working on for about a month and a half with Steve Turner Contemporary and here’s a little web preview of the map.  The actual measurements will be 17 x 22 in., and available before and during PST and Art Platform, Los Angeles.

Steve Turner Contemporary is pleased to announce the publication of its Los Angeles Artists Map. It will be released in September as a part of Pacific Standard Time and Art Platform, Los Angeles and is designed to put a face on Los Angeles’ reputation as a world center for contemporary art production. Twenty-five artist studios are featured, but because some of the buildings house multiple artists, over seventy-five artists are included.

The featured artists include Adam D. Miller and Morgan Wells in Boyle Heights; Lee Lynch in Chinatown; Jesse Mockrin in Cypress Park; Pearl C. Hsiung and Jed Lind in Glassell Park; Michael Decker and Gabrielle Ferrer in Highland Park; Joshua Callaghan in Lincoln Heights; Jane Lee in Little Tokyo; Anne McCaddon in Silverlake; Noah Doely, Yaron Michael Hakim, William Kaminski, Greg Kozaki and Jemima Wyman near Downtown; Masood Kamandy in Mid-Wilshire; Ana Rodriguez in Inglewood; Justin Lowman in Northridge; Rowan Wood in Mar Vista, Nevan Lahart in Santa Monica and Sergio Bromberg in Culver City.

The artists are all young and they represent a diverse cross section of media, style and experience. Local MFA and BFA programs are well represented with artists having attended Art Center; CalArts; UC Irvine; UC San Diego; UCLA; USC; Claremont; UC Riverside and Otis.

Pasha Kuznetsov

August 13, 2011

Pasha Kuznetsov is an effortlessly talented and charismatic young skater from Moscow, Russia, who is successfully leading a skate gypsy lifestyle combining it with music, fashion and art. Being a Quiksilver advocate he also created several graphics for his pro decks by the local skate company Absurd Skateboards (absurdskateboards.com), a project of skate photographer Lev Maslov. Pasha’s giant kickflips and smooth riding style has become iconic for the scene as well as his crazy outfits and beautiful disaster image.

Eat me.

August 5, 2011

Oddly obsessed with a few things right now that seem to have to do with food.

First, Faux Food cans, by my good friend and fellow (ex) Nashvillian, Mike Davis aka Mike 2600.

You can see how they look on a can, here, in situ.

Then this awesome vegetable thing…

Then, another friend Ana Benaroya with this crazy “apple-bet”…

And this Brain Head print, that isn’t food, but reminds me of food for some reason.

Stay hungry.

Death Cab for Cutie – a tale of two posters

August 5, 2011

I was recently asked to design a limited edition poster for  Death Cab for Cutie’s show at the Mann in Philly. The chosen design (above) is a 2 color screen print on French paper, limited to a print run of 40 and presented to the band as a gift from the promoter, AEG.

Now originally, I had the idea of doing a Death Cab poster that was a direct parody of ACDC’s infamous Highway to Hell album cover, because when I realized the band’s initials were DC4C, it seemed like too good of an idea to pass up, and one that I thought for sure someone else must have used previously (after a couple hours of solid research though, I never found anything). And, honestly, you couldn’t get a greater contrast in sound or attitude than between these two bands, which is why I thought it was funny. Plus, I figured, given the age of the Death Cab guys, they were probably into metal at some point of their dark teen age years, so they would appreciate the joke. Unfortunately, AEG passed on the design, wanting to go with something much less cartoony, which is totally their prerogative, no hard feelings, we’re all professionals here, etc.etc. – but I was happy enough with the general idea and execution that I figured it was worth sharing here, rather than stay tucked away in some digital graveyard of rejected ideas. Anyway, I hope you dig it.

I do have a few extra prints of the top design that should be available for purchase in the next few weeks on my website, so stay tuned if you’re interest.

Nataly Rukavishnikova

July 31, 2011

Nataly Rukavishnikova is a 19-year old scenographer and student based out of Moscow, Russia. She recently worked on Goethe’s “Faust” set in Moscow School of Dramatic Art.  She is also a dedicated skater and longboarder. Nataly spends her time sketching in the subway and making tiny models out of cardboard, cotton thread and wood which seem to originate from “Alice behind the looking glass” world. She is also flipping down the stairs and cruising around on her skateboard impressively enough to be an advocate of Nike SB in Russia.

Color Magazine Collector’s Issue 2011 Featuring Allister Lee

July 29, 2011

The new Color Magazine, Collector’s issue (4 standard issues and 2 special editions a year) is in and amongst its many great photos and articles related to, “Collecting”, Allister Lee tops it for me personally with his successful 500 Black Marker Poster.  I had the honor of releasing his poster this past Spring with great results and tons of appreciative fans worldwide.  Color delves a bit deeper into Allister’s workspace in Toronto and his affection for black markers.

You can get one Allister’s 500 marker poster at Equal Dist. while supplies last.
