Random Zine #10

January 11, 2012

John Freeborn has just released Random Zine #10, with a bit of a twist, this is the first time he’s releasing this zine as an iBook only.

Along with 19 other artists, he kindly asked me to participate in this issue. I submitted one piece, which I would call pretty random for me, it was fun! 100 pages with artwork by (in order of appearance) Hershel Baltrotsky, Sonia Yoon, Clint Woodside, Ryan Wallace, Rich Jacobs, Jim Houser, Kendrick Shackleford, Tom Maher, Ben Horton, Eric McDade, Chris Sembrot, Joseph Hart, Matt Sohl, Dave Delaney, Sam Croswell, Carlos Miaco, Matt Curtius, Amy S. Kauffman and Jordin Isip.

It’s only $.99 in the apple iBook store, click here to get it!

Skateboarding Australia (sba.org.au)

October 18, 2011

Since the start of the year I have been working for Skateboarding Australia (SbA) which is a government funded body implemented to promote and grow skateboarding in our country. More about us here. Aside from being head judge for their Am Series and Pro/Am Tour (curated by Aussie legend Andrew Currie) I have been updating their website’s blog and features.

Including:
Feature interviews with Aussie luminaries such as Chima, Tommy Fynn, Steve Gourlay, Reece Warren, Joel McIlroy and Jack Fardell.

Chinwags with Andrew Brophy, Paul Brabenec and Trent Evans.

There are a bunch of video based regulars as well:
A to Bs with Barry Mansfield, and Dave “Battlecat” Harris
Lost Tapes with Daniel Cardone.
What’s Crackin’ with Nathan Jackson
Recons on the new Belconnen and Nimbin parks.

We also do historical pieces like
Flashbacks with Brett Margaritis, Matt Mumford, Davo and Lee Ralph.
and Video Vaults with Al Boglio, Wade Burkitt (pictured above), Cale Nuske, Tas Pappas, Dustin Dollin and Lewis Marnell.

There are wrap-ups on comps such as Shocklands and the Goldy Grail.
Hope you enjoy this little package of top shelf antipodean skateboarding.

Stay tuned at sba.org.au

Below you will find a selection of images from the site.

Illustration in Maisonneuve Magazine

July 1, 2011

A while back I did an illustration for Montreal-based quarterly art magazine,  Maisonneuve Magazine. We incorporated a older drawing of a group of dudes partying, and I actually added the legs of all those dudes for an editorial written by Drew Nelles.  I also drew a guy performing, and they later told me that it actually looked like Drew, the writer.

Modern Atlanta

June 27, 2011

I just received my copy of Modern Atlanta from MA Creative Director and Arm Chair Media Art Director, Kevin Byrd. I am always bummed that I miss this event goes every summer. Hopefully next year I will plan ahead and attend.

Modern Atlanta is a great group that focuses on the human side of design, which is a side that is often-times  overlooked. They have created a great network of like-minded designers, artists, architects and general modern design enthusiasts since their inception in 2007. The modern home tour is a great event to launch the summer.

Contrast Magazine No. 5

February 8, 2011

Todd Shimabuku (In4mation) linked Geoff McFetridge and myself with Mark Kushimi of CONTRAST magazine a few months ago. Contrast is on issue No. 05 and coming straight out of my home-island of Oahu, Hawaii with consistently good content and great contributors.  Mark was generous with allowing Geoff to work on, “The Geeks” cover along with a 10 page insert of the upcoming Solitary Arts Times.  It’s the precursor to the full-length Times, which will be twice the size with a pull-out, double-sided poster (Kyle Field on one side and Geoff’s artwork on the other).  We’re honored to be featured in Contrast and thank Mark for his overwhelming support. Contrast is free so pick-one up if you’re in the islands. You can also order one from Hawaii through their site, HERE.

Mahalo from the Solitary Arts!

Journal Mag Retrospective

January 21, 2011

Back in the late Nineties a few friends of mine started Journal Magazine. For us in Philly this was a big deal, energy was high here and all along the east coast, it was awesome to see it covered by the people who were immersed in our local scene. Sadly, the magazine only lasted three issues, but for us it was a cherished moment in Philly skate history. Rob Brink recently interviewed Rick Valenzuela about the story behind Journal. Much to my surprise, Rick even gave me a shout out at the end, I would’ve posted this anyway, but that little mention made my day… Again, I thank you Rick! Check it out! You can also download issue zero now, and issues one and two will be up soon.

Faesthetic #13! 10 years in the making…

January 17, 2011

I’m super excited to announce that the new issue of Faesthetic dropped this past week. Featuring the contributions of over 40 artists, as well as thoughts on the past 10 and upcoming 10 years from an amazing cast of characters: Jeff Staple, Jason Polan, Tiffany Bozic, Cody Hudson, Roger Gastman & Porous Walker. With cover art by the one and only Mike Giant, and punch out cards from one of my favorite artists; Mark Mothersbaugh.

To celebrate the new issue and 10 years of independent publishing, I’m offering the new issue for only $13. To top that, the available back catalog is only $13 more. That’s 7 issues for only $26. Hit Faesthetic.com for more information.

Manfre’s Mentalism

January 7, 2011

It’s nothing new to say that skater’s have a strong creative streak as a whole. There are more than a few former and current pros who have careers in the visual arts. Tony Manfre is one of those who not only thinks outside of the box on his board but keep his brain active by documenting what interests him. In this COLOR feature Tony shares some of his photographic and film work. Also included is a short skate edit featuring Mr. Manfre.

Hunt

January 5, 2011

In issue 8.5 of COLOR is an article called Jack of Two Trades the talks about the few media men that shoot photos and film the activity we love so much. Greg Hunt is one of those multi-skilled individuals that has made a lasting impact on how we view things. Maybe as a former pro he sees things differently? Who knows, but I for one hope he continues to do that amazing work he does.
