MAKE IT COUNT – CHAPTER 3 “FIRE”

November 2, 2009
MAKE IT COUNT – CHAPTER 3 “FIRE”

In creating Chapter 3 of 4, “FIRE” I interviewed a myriad of Element riders and alumni, including Bam, Chad Muska, Chad Tim Tim, Darrell Stanton, Donny Barley, Mike V and more. Through their interviews, along with key industry insiders, Element’s defining moments of its early history is explored using historical footage and iconic imagery to tell the story.

CROWNFARMER WEEK 4 – ANDREW POMMIER

October 19, 2009

If you’ve been reading for the past few weeks you’ve surely seen the return of t-shirt brand, Crownfarmer and know that from now until forever it will be linking up with Club Mumble every week to bring you a t-shirt designed by a member in good standing.

Week 4 is a design by illustrator/painter Andrew Pommier. You might know his work from the bottoms of skateboards, the sides of skateboard wheels, maybe from his Adidas that came out a little while back or the countless art shows and magazines his work has been featured in over the years. Maybe you even have a copy of his book, Things I Don’t Remember? Click HERE to grab one of his tees or continue reading to learn a little more about Andrew and what he does…

What was the first design you ever got paid for?
In the mid 90s I was asked by a pro I knew in Toronto to do a board graphic for Balance Skateboards. In the end the board wasn’t run but the top graphic was covertly turned into a t-shirt graphic. Once I found out that is was produced I was paid $50 for my time.

What was the last design you got paid for?
I did an 80s inspired board graphic for Heroin Skateboards.

What’s your favorite book ever?
That’s an impossible question to answer…but with that said I’ll say “Crime and Punishment” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. I read it during a my last year of art school. I was studying in Italy away from all of my regular distractions so it was pretty much just art and reading. The time and place are really the things that are great about the book but it’s still a great read.

What was the last book you bought?
“Kafka on the Shore” by Murakami. His books are so odd and I love the way the stories are structured. A lot of open ended story lines. Once you start reading it’s hard to put down.

If you had to list your top 3 influences, what or who would they be?
1. Brie
2. Creative and challenging art
3. Going somewhere new

What’s the worst thing about your life right now?
Deadlines and procrastination.

What’s the best thing about your life right now?
Waking up and just following my nose.

What was the first design you ever got paid for?
I’m not totally sure, it was either the layout of a compilation CD for a local radio station or a logo for a coffee shop that I worked at in Victoria, Canada.

What was the last design you got paid for?
A trip to London to work with four of the guys that skate for Adidas. There was a big ad campaign shoot for the whole Adidas Originals brand and they wanted skating involved. My job was to represent the skaters and filter out all of the weird stuff. It was a bizarre experience, but if someone doesn’t know how to film skating it’s easy to make it look horrible. I guess I was like the “skate-police” on the shoot, and I probably annoyed the hell out of Read more

What was the first design you ever got paid for?
it was my first ever board graphic for Consolidated Skateboards, a monkey wrench covered in blood. i wasnt paid in cash money, so i dunno if this answer still counts as “paid” the way you are asking. i was given 4 boards, which isnt shit, but at the same time, just to have done a board graphic for me was worth more than any amount of money.

What was the last design you got paid for?
A set of 2 graphics for Sean Malto on Girl. the graphics are in relation to his biker gang, “The Read more

Robert Kronbauer the 16th

August 17, 2009

thekronbauers

I met Bob years ago through our mutual friend John Trippe when he was still working at Girl. Over the years I’ve watched Bob grow up from a young Art Dumper who used to sleep under his desk into a man who controls his destiny. As much shit as I give Bob I respect and think he does a pretty damn good job at just about everything he sets his hands on. He even scarred Porous into faking an illness after his skills on the Big Red proved to be too good for the man from Napa. Recently I interviewed Bob for my blog on SLAP, check it out and see just some of what the creep from Canadia has made over the years.

Andy Howell Interview for SLAP Magazine

August 11, 2009

One of my favorite things to do is talk with certain heroes about three of my most beloved things: art, music, and skateboarding. Last time it was Tobin Yelland, and this time it is one of those talented and lucky shredders that skated an unforgettable era alongside artist peers Natas and Gonz. If you guessed Andy Howell, you’re right on.

I recently had a great conversation with Andy Howell, longtime contributor to the skateboard world, which was published as his interview in SLAP Magazine. Read the full article by clicking this.
