Teach Me Culture : reggae talk’n with John Cardiel

October 24, 2011

Life and its tribulations did it: they ended up turning John Cardiel into Juan Love, a reknown reggae riddim sommelier. Having fed each other with rare Jamaican music over the last few years, it felt just natural that some day, we’d have to sit down and talk strictly about a music that, you might be surprised to find out, doesn’t have anything to do with hippieness. Or maybe it does: just dare and call Sizzla, Barrington Levy or Scientist “tree-huggers” next time you bump into them. Results may vary. Conversation to be read at A Visual Sound.

Dos Does It Better (Kira Roessler, Mike Watt)

August 19, 2011

I’m a supporter of anything that Mike Watt puts together, and so needless to say, I was beyond happy when he told me he was releasing a new Dos album through Clenched Wrench Records. If you don’t know, you should find out. Check the video here.

CEREBRAL BALLZY

August 17, 2011

Cerebral Ballzy just released a new music video, entitled “On the Run”, which is an homage to old 80′s skate videos. You’ve got to watch it and see for yourself, as you won’t believe this was shot in modern times. Featuring Christian Hosoi, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, and Steve Alba, the video was directed by Jonathan Rej and Tom Bingham, and shot by the one and only, Ira Ingram.

Death Cab for Cutie – a tale of two posters

August 5, 2011

I was recently asked to design a limited edition poster for  Death Cab for Cutie’s show at the Mann in Philly. The chosen design (above) is a 2 color screen print on French paper, limited to a print run of 40 and presented to the band as a gift from the promoter, AEG.

Now originally, I had the idea of doing a Death Cab poster that was a direct parody of ACDC’s infamous Highway to Hell album cover, because when I realized the band’s initials were DC4C, it seemed like too good of an idea to pass up, and one that I thought for sure someone else must have used previously (after a couple hours of solid research though, I never found anything). And, honestly, you couldn’t get a greater contrast in sound or attitude than between these two bands, which is why I thought it was funny. Plus, I figured, given the age of the Death Cab guys, they were probably into metal at some point of their dark teen age years, so they would appreciate the joke. Unfortunately, AEG passed on the design, wanting to go with something much less cartoony, which is totally their prerogative, no hard feelings, we’re all professionals here, etc.etc. – but I was happy enough with the general idea and execution that I figured it was worth sharing here, rather than stay tucked away in some digital graveyard of rejected ideas. Anyway, I hope you dig it.

I do have a few extra prints of the top design that should be available for purchase in the next few weeks on my website, so stay tuned if you’re interest.
