Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone by Sarah Larnach

Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone by Sarah Larnach

My friend and fellow Element advocate, Sarah Larnach, lives over in New Zealand, where there was some pretty gnarly earthquakes not so long ago. Here is an email that she sent out about this painting that she has donated which is currently being auctioned…

“Hello!

This is an email to let you know about a painting of mine being auctioned for charity, and I’ve emailed either because I think you might want to look, or maybe to bid, or because you-are-my-mum-Katy-and-I’ll-get-a-TellingOff -if-I-dont-tell-you-about-this.

So, earthquakes in Christchurch earlier this year were awful- many many lives lost and homes rendered unlivable. It was always going to be hard going for the people of Christchurch, especially recovering in the uncertainty of months of aftershocks.
And now… snow! So much snow.

The auction group that I have donated to is called The Easel Project; an initiative by some young artists to raise some cash for our Christchurch kin, in conjunction with The Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army who have a Mobile Hot Shower Unit in operation in Christchurch, by the way- and THAT has really bought it home for me!
Yes, i know people need groceries and jobs, but.. hot showers! I can only imagine!   (though i dont want to imagine the post shower dash home through the snow. no, i really dont).

Without further ado, here is The Auction on Trade Me. The auction started ends on Friday the 26th.

the specs- ’Giant Moa Has A Giant Wishbone’, Sarah Larnach, February 2011
ORIGINAL painting.
Watercolour and gold ink on 600gsm paper. 39cm wide x 56cm tall

‘The giant moa has been extinct for about 250 years, but these massive birds were once the worlds largest. I’ve painted this moa in the style of a museum taxidermy guide, for my Wonder Cabinet (Wunderkammer) series. The special detail in this painting is the wishbone (which would be about 50cm tall on a Moa) , here symbolically painted in gold for hope and good wishes.  This is the first original piece in this series to go up for sale.

Please have a look at the auction, because even the browsing traffic can inspire the spenders!

Thank you,
Sarah Larnach”

Fathersons Press – It Never Happened Before

August 22, 2011

Just released a limited zine on FATHERSONS PRESS. “It Never Happened Before” is a collection of found monthly planner entries and notes from my grandfather and images of his pasture and outbuildings I have been taking over the past several years.

All of the Fatherssons releases are the same format and the run is only 20, so if you want one, don’t hesitate.

Megadeth Cake

August 7, 2011

I prefer drawing but I also used to decorate a lot of cakes. A few years ago I got sick of all the preparation so I stopped. Last week my buddy asked me to make this one for a sick friend of his. Two days later I had it finished and remembered why I don’t decorate cakes anymore. Its a pain in the cake hole. In return for the cake he gave me a 15 year old No Redeeming Social Values Tshirt that’s way too big for me, and the news that his friend loved the cake and it cheered him up a lot.

Interview with Neon Forest

July 13, 2011

I recently did one of those “virtual” online interviews with the nice folks at NEON FOREST GALLERY.  We will also be releasing a limited edition t-shirt that I designed.  Read the interview here.  I expound upon a very significant moment that I had at K-mart.

Also available is a shirt I designed for them. 2 color silk screen, limited run of 24 shirts only.  Buy one here

Tri – X – Noise

July 6, 2011

The  zen master, Bill Daniel, has been in the shed re-tooling his photo site. The new Tri-x-noise is up and is a gold mine of classic dark room printed photos. From the punk /skate scene of East Texas to the monikers of America’s train-lines.  Also, this is the place to get your Bozo Texino fix. Check back often, Bill is updating on a regular basis.

There are so many must haves… one of my personal favorites.

Modern Atlanta

June 27, 2011

I just received my copy of Modern Atlanta from MA Creative Director and Arm Chair Media Art Director, Kevin Byrd. I am always bummed that I miss this event goes every summer. Hopefully next year I will plan ahead and attend.

Modern Atlanta is a great group that focuses on the human side of design, which is a side that is often-times  overlooked. They have created a great network of like-minded designers, artists, architects and general modern design enthusiasts since their inception in 2007. The modern home tour is a great event to launch the summer.

RAW BEEF: YUM

June 23, 2011

I don’t have an oven or stovetop where I live. As a result, I’ve experimented with some recipes that require neither. Microwave ’til I die.

RAMMELLZEE At The Museum of Contemporary Art

June 23, 2011

I was completely awed by what the Rammellzee Estate and Suzanne Geiss put together for The RAMM:ELL:ZEE Room at MOCA Los Angeles. If you haven’t already, I suggest you experience it. That dude is radical. Check the video here. Thanks to some sort of generous concession from Banksy’s patrons, you can visit the exhibit without an entry fee on Mondays. Free Mondays at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA will be every Monday, from 11am to 5pm, June 13 through August 8, 2011.

PICKLED EGGS

June 13, 2011

I don’t have an oven or stovetop where I live. As a result, I’ve experimented with some recipes that require neither. Microwave ’til I die.

Pickled eggs are best consumed with amounts of beer that your mom would totally disapprove of.

Ingredients:

Purple Pickled Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs (doy)

Distilled white vinegar

Water

Canned beet juice

Salt (non-iodized)

Pepper (whole peppercorns or fresh-ground)

Fresh dill

Fresh garlic

Canned beet juice

Spicy-Ass Pickled Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs (doy)

Distilled white vinegar

Water

Salt (non-iodized)

Pepper (whole peppercorns or fresh-ground)

Habanero peppers (fresh or picked)

Red pepper flakes

Tapatio (don’t be shy with it)

1. Hard-boil your eggs. (google how to hard-boil eggs in a microwave. it’s totally cinchy) Adding a bit of salt or vinegar to the water makes peeling easier. Also, make sure they’re not super fresh eggs. The fresher they are, the more of a pain in the ass they are to peel. Nothing’s more of a bummer than hard-to-peel eggs.

2. Peel the eggs and put ‘em into a re-sealable container with a wide mouth. Glass is best. Plastic is kinda sucky for reasons I’ll explain later. Get all those little bits of shell and that grody membrane off of the eggs. Nobody likes that crud.

3. Microwave a mixture of 2 parts vinegar to one part water and a couple tablespoons of salt. It takes for freaking ever to boil, so you’ll have plenty of time to smoke a cigarette or feed your cat while it’s taking its sweet ass time to boil.

4. Once the vinegar/water/salt brine comes to a boil, remove it from the heat and pour it over the eggs/seasonings. Leave a little room at the top of the jar. Seal them thangs up and stick ‘em in the fridge for a few days. The longer they sit, the better they are.

The recipe and proportions are pretty open to interpretation. As long as there’s a majority of vinegar in the brine, they’ll last for freaking ever. Vinegar is to bacteria as sobriety is to Charlie Sheen.

I used plastic containers this time. They’re cruddy. They got all deformed after I added the hot brine and wouldn’t seal completely. Stick with glass.
