Changing Lives Through Skateboarding

December 6, 2011

Elemental Awareness hit the road to visit their friends on the Apache, Flathead, and Navajo reservations, where they were able to skate with the kids, and connect on a larger level…

Through the CHANGING LIVES THROUGH SKATEBOARDING program, they were able to give away more than 100 pairs of shoes, 50 skateboards and tons of other product. Needless to say, the kids were hyped and received some much needed gear.

Click here to see some photos from the tour. And for more information on Elemental Awareness and their programs, visit their site and Facebook page.

ELEMENTAL AWARENESS REZ TOUR

August 30, 2011

Elemental Awareness hits the road once a year for their Rez tour. On the annual trip, they visit Native American reservations across the country to give back to the communities. Check out the video to see what’s gone on in the past, and for more information about this year’s tour, “The Long Strange Trip”, which has four stops, go to Elemental Awareness.

“MAKE IT COUNT” FINALS VIDEO – ELEMENT CONTEST SERIES

June 26, 2011

The MAKE IT COUNT contests by Element is an amazing series of grass-root events that finishes at Skate Camp every summer for its finals… The contest winners from each event, from around the world, come together once a year to skate together at Skate Camp. It’s an incredible experience, as you’re immersed within all things skateboarding; creativity, energy, ingenuity, and positivity.

This is the highlight video of the actual contest, which was ridiculous, considering these are un-sponsored kids who are skating at pro-level status. Check back soon, as I’ll be putting together a recap video of the year’s events and personalities.

MR BIG SUR SCHOLARSHIP

April 18, 2011

With Skate Camp season around the corner, I’ve been scouting for a lucky kid to receive a scholarship to the Element YMCA Skate Camp with the funds raised by the Mr Big Sur event in December last year… And I found the winner! Her name is Victoria Ruesga, and she is 13yrs old.

I first saw Victoria compete at the Los Angeles, Make It Count event last year, and then again at the Santa Ana contest this year. Both times, her passion and talent for skateboarding caught my eye. She is definitely destined for big things.

Congratulations to Victoria for being so awesome! You get an all expenses paid  trip up to Element YMCA Skate Camp!

A very special thank you to all the Element Advocates that donated your time and talents to give a kid an experience of a lifetime… Brooke Reidt, Chad Eaton, Chad Muska, Juliana Neufeld, Matt Irving, Mike Kershnar, Miya Ando and Todd Francis, you guys rock.

Also special shout out to Elemental Awareness for all the awesome things you guys do for the local communities and kids. It’s what you guys do every day that inspired this exhibition. So, thank you.

Also, check out this video I found of Victoria Ruesga skating at the North Hollywood Skate Plaza - Victoria Ruesga At North Hollywood Plaza.  It’s so rad!

AFTER SCHOOL SPECIAL

October 28, 2010

Elemental Awareness helps support the after school skate program at Century Middle School in Inglewood, LA. Last week EA rocked up, giving the kids new boards, wheels, and even shoes to help and promote their cause… The after school skate program offers a drug free, safe place for kids to learn how to skate from inspirational mentors and peers.

There were plenty of smiles to go round as we played ‘Dizzie ollie’ and gave out prizes. The kids with the most thrashed skateboards, actually won new ones!

Thanks for the good times!

A VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS

June 25, 2010

1

Four hours north-east of LA is a sacred piece of heaven. It’s 5400 feet above sea level, and the Sequoia trees grow so high that you can barely see their top branches.

Over the weekend was the MAKE IT COUNT contest series, in the Sequoia National Park at theYMCA Element Skate Camp. It’s a place where kids come to learn how to survive in the wilderness, how to succeed in life,  and how to skate their best.

Visually, Skate Camp is absolutely beautiful. Audibly, there were accents from all over the world… Contestants came from  Portugal, Canada, Australia, and cities throughout the United States. And Element’s international offices came out to cheer for their respected regions, as Element Europe, Japan, and Australia were in attendance.

Prior to the contest, we hiked to Stony Creek where the Europe crew, Guy (from Portugal), Levi Brown, and a few skaters were the only ones brave enough to swim in the icy waters.

Todd Larson and Matt Luciani from Elemental Awareness taught us survival techniques, how to make shelter, create our own utensils with hot coals and wood, and make fire from only the bare essentials. Nevertheless, our European brethren Phil and Christian came through with the goods by making the best looking spoons!

Late at night we got to hang out next to the camp fire, where Guy tried to scare us with his Black Bear impersonation, which was met with rolling laughter instead of screams! Hehe… Thanks for the laughs Guy!.

More photos here.
