Yarrr

August 29, 2011

Today I finished a drawing for this year’s annual Yarrr art show, which I am keeping under wraps for now. My friend Micah Pearson runs a small Tshirt brand here in Melbourne, called Yarrr.

Each year, he gets a number of different artists to design a Tshirt print and produces a limited number of each shirt which he then sells via his website. He also holds an annual exhibition where the original artworks are on display. Despite some bad luck at times (dodgey beer sponsors trying to get in with what I guess they percieved as the cool youth/skate market, and then deciding not to deliver 1 hour before the event) it’s always one hell of a party.

Last year (apart from having to supply beer for everyone at the opening, out of his own pocket) Micah also produced a calendar so each artist got given a month to base their design on. I was given April, so I based my drawing very loosely on Easter…. and of course skateboarding, heavy metal and a bad pun. I was hardly breaking new ground. I think my caption was something like “Easter Metal – celebrating the death of Jesus for over 2,000 years.” Real cerebral stuff.
